The LaPerm is a charming and distinctive cat. They have an elegant and athletic build which gives a clue to the fact that they are no couch potatoes, but active, outgoing cats who like to join in with whatever their humans are doing. When people see a LaPerm for the first time it is their soft coats of shaggy curls and ringlets which make a big impression.

Appropriately the LaPerm’s origins were in the early ‘80s when shaggy perms were the height of fashion. Linda and Richard Koehl had moved to the Oregon countryside for an easier pace of life, buying a cherry farm and investing in some hardy farm cats to keep the mice in check. One of these gave birth to a rather bald, long, skinny kitten a bit like the Pink Panther with a tabby pattern on her skin. Linda wondered if something was wrong with the kitten, but as she grew she developed a lovely soft curly coat which everyone liked to touch.

The kitten was named Curly and grew up to be a favourite on the farm, getting into all sorts of scrapes and eventually growing round and showing the signs that she was soon going to have kittens of her own. As a young and innocent first time mum she found herself in labour under a tree in the middle of a blustery rainstorm one night. Linda heard strange noises and took a torch outside to find Curly fiercely staving off barking dogs while straddling her five newborn babies. Linda took the family to safety and realised that the kittens all had the same appearance as their mother had at birth. All five were male and grew up to have the same soft curls. They also took just as much interest in reproduction and with five studs keeping the farm’s females entertained before long the cherry trees were as full of curly kittens as they had been with mice!

Linda found herself with a growing colony of unusual cats and decided to do some research. She took some cats to a show to ask for feedback and was told by the judges that she had something special. People were keen to develop a breeding programme and a new breed was born which has grown and grown in popularity and spread around the world.

The LaPerm breed is strongly allied with Native American culture as the area where the Koehl’s farm is situated is in a sacred territory of a Chinook tribe called the Wishram people. The area still contains rock carvings of the vigilant goddess Tsagaglalal, who some feel has kept watch over the LaPerms. This is why many LaPerm breeders give Native American names to their kittens.

The LaPerm is a cat of moderation with no extremes; it does however have a striking appearance because of its unusual coat. The lean, muscular body is medium sized with longish legs and neck. The head is elegant with gently rounded contours and a broad muzzle. They have rather straight noses with just a gentle dip in the profile and large ears placed to follow the line of the face. Many owners are enchanted by their large and expressive almond-shaped eyes.

LaPerms come in all colours and patterns: reds and torties have always been well represented, but more unusual colours like lilac and chocolate are also popular. Patterns such as colourpoint are very attractive and newer varieties such as ticked tabbies and shadeds are also being bred. The curl tends to open up the coat showing off shading or striped bands of ticking on the hairs, creating a striking and unique effect.

The coat itself is described as having a unique textured feel. It is not silky, having a certain drag on the hand like velvet. It should be soft and inviting, although the shorthairs will have more texture. The coat is rather loose and bouncy, often feeling springy when patted, and stands away from the body with no thick undercoat. It is wavy or curly all over with the longest and most defined curls in the ruff often falling in ringlets. The longhairs have a curly plumed tail while the shorthairs have tails rather like bottle brushes, and both have long curled whiskers.

The LaPerm is an ideal family pet as they are loving, affectionate and sociable. A bonus is the fact that they shed very little and are a good choice for people with mild allergies who want a cat they can live with. They are active cats so in a quiet household it is a good idea to have a pair. They are hardy and healthy with no special care needs and are low maintenance when it comes to grooming as their non-matting coats only need an occasional comb through. In fact breeders often find that owners come back to them for a second kitten saying that one LaPerm is not enough!

Die LaPerm sind eine bezaubernde und unterscheidende Katzen. Sie haben einen eleganten und athletischen Bau, der der Tatsache, daß sie keine SOFAKATZEN sind, aber den aktiven, abgehenden Katzen einen Anhaltspunkt gibt, die wie mit innen verbinden, was auch immer ihre Menschen tun. Wenn Leute eine LaPerm zum ersten Mal sehen, sind es ihre weichen Mäntel der shaggy Wellungen und der ringlets, die einen grossen Eindruck hinterlasser.

Passend waren die Ursprung des LaPerms in den frühen `80s, als shaggy Perms auf die Höhe waren. Linda und Richard Koehl waren nach Oregon für ein einfaches Leben umgezogen, sie haben einen Kirschbauernhof gekauft und in einigen robusten Bauernhofkatzen investiert, um die Mäuse in der Umgebung zu fangen . Eins von diesen gebar ein ziemlich kahles, langes, dünnes Kitten  eine Spitze wie der rosafarbene Leopard mit einem Tabbymuster auf ihrer Haut. Linda wunderte sich, wenn etwas mit dem Kitten nichht in Ordnung war, aber, da sie wuchs, entwickelte sie einen reizenden weichen lockigen Fell, den jeder berühren mochte.

Der Kitten wurde Curly genannt und wurde der Liebling auf dem Bauernhof,  sie wuchs heran bis Soiie selbst Kitten bekommen konnte. Wie ein junges unschuldiges Kitten zum ersten mal von ihr geboren wurde bei einem Regensturm unter einem Baum. Linda hörte merkwürdige Geräusche und nahm eine Fackel draußen zu ihrer verwunderung 5 lockige Babies. Linda nahm die Familie zur Sicherheit ins haus und stellte fest, daß die Kittens das gleiche Aussehen hatten, wie ihre Mutter bei der Geburt. Alle fünf waren männlich und wuchsen mit der gleichen Entwicklung auf.

Linda fand sich mit einer wachsenden Kolonie der ungewöhnlichen Katzen und entschied, etwas Forschung zu beteriben. Sie nahm einige Katzen mit zu einer Katzeneausstellung um auf die ergbnisse zu warten. Bei Rückgesprächen zu den Richtern erklärt sie, daß sie etwas spezielleshatte. Die Leute waren scharf, darauf eine neue Rasse zu entwickeln und eine die um die Welt gewachsen ist.

Die LaPerm Zucht ist stark mit  amerikanischer Kultur verbunden, in dem der Bauernhof des Koehls ist in einer heiligen Gegend eines Chinookstammes aufgestellt wurde, der die Wishram Leute genannt wird. Der Bereich enthält noch Felsen Carvings der aufmerksamen Göttin Tsagaglalal, der irgendein Gefühl der inneren Uhr über dem LaPerms gehalten hat. Deshalb geben viele LaPerm Züchter ihren Kittens gebürtige amerikanische Namen.

Die LaPerm ist eine Katze der Mäßigung ohne Übermaße; sie hat jedoch ein auffallendes Aussehen wegen seines ungewöhnlichen Fells. Der Magere, muskulöser Körper ist mit den länglichen Beinen und Ansatz mittelgroß. Der Kopf ist mit leicht gerundeten Formen elegant. Sie haben eine ziemlich gerade Nase mit gerade einem leichten Bad im Profil und in den großen Ohren, die gesetzt werden, um der Linie des Gesichtes zu folgen. Viele Inhaber werden durch ihre großen und ausdrucksvollen Mandel-geformten Augen verzaubert.

LaPerms kommen in alle Farben und in Muster: Rottöne und torties sind immer gut, aber ungewöhnlichere Farben dargestellt worden, wie Flieder und Schokolade auch populär sind. Muster wie colourpoint sind sehr attraktiv und neuere Vielzahl wie getickte Tabbies und shadeds wird auch gezüchtet. Die Wellung neigt, den Fell zu erschließen, der weg vom Schattieren oder von den gestreiften Bändern des Tickens auf den Haaren darstellt und verursacht einen auffallenden und einzigartigen Effekt.

Das Fell selbst wird als beschrieben, ein einzigartiges Texturgefühl habend. Er ist nicht silky und hat eine bestimmte Gegenkraft auf der Hand wie Samt. Er sollte weich und einladend sein, obgleich die Kurzhaarkatzen mehr Beschaffenheit haben. Das Fell ist ziemlich lose und bouncy und springy häufig fühlt, wenn er getappt wird, und steht weg vom Körper ohne starkes unterfell. Er ist wellenförmig oder ganz rüber mit den längsten und definierten Wellungen im ruff lockig, das häufig in ringlets fällt. Die Lanhaarkatzen haben ein lockiges plumed Endstück, während die shorthairs Endstücke eher wie Flasche Bürsten haben und beide lang Whiskers gekräuselt haben.

Die LaPerm ist ein ideales Familien Haustier, da sie liebevoll sociable sind, liebevoll und. Eine Prämie ist die Tatsache, daß sie sehr wenig verschütten und ist eine gute Wahl für Leute mit milden Allergien, die eine Katze wünschen, die, sie mit leben können. Sie sind aktive Katzen, also in einem ruhigen Haushalt ist es eine gute Idee, ein Paar zu haben. Sie sind robust und ohne Notwendigkeiten der besonderen Sorgfalt gesund und sind niedrige Wartung, wenn es zum Pflegen kommt, während ihre Nichtmattenstoff Mäntel nur einen gelegentlichen Kamm durch benötigen. Tatsächlich finden Züchter häufig, daß Inhaber zu ihnen für einen zweiten Kitten Saying zurückkommen, daß ein LaPerm nicht genug ist!

Le La Perm est un chat charmant et distingué. Il a un corps élégant et athlétique, ce qui donne un indice sur le fait qu'il n'est pas un sac à patapouf, mais un chat actif, qui aime se joindre à tout ce que font les humains.

Quand les gens voient un La Perm pour la première fois, c'est sa robe douce et bouclée qui fait le plus d'impression.

Les origines du La Perm datent du début des 80's, quand les permanentes étaient la pointe de la mode. Linda et Richard Koehl avaient déménagé pour l'Oregon, afin d'y trouver une vie plus saine, et avaient acheté un jolie ferme et investi dans quelques chats afin d'éloigner les souris. L'un d'eux donna naissance à un chaton plutôt chauve, long, maigre, un peu comme une Panthère Rose, avec un patron tabby sur la peau. Linda se demanda ce qui n'allait pas avec ce chaton, mais en grandissant, il développa une robe douce et bouclée que tout le monde voulait toucher.

Cette chatonne fut prénommée Curly et vécu comme le petite préféré de la ferme, participant à tous les coups, et devenant alors ronde... elle attendait elle-même des petits. Comme une jeune mère pour la première fois, elle mit bas toute seule, sous un cerisier pendant une nuit de tempête violente. Linda entendit un bruit bizarre, pris une torche et alla trouver Curly, s'occupant de ses 5 nouveaux bébés. Elle prit la petite famille et réalisa que tous les chatons avaient la même apparence que leur mère à sa naissance. C'était tous des mâles et ils grandirent et prirent le même pelage doux et frisé que leur mère. Ils se sont ensuite reproduit et d'autre chatons virent le jour sous le cerisier qui les vit naître.

Linda constata qu'elle avait une "colonie" de chats pas communs et fit des recherches. Elle en emmena à une exposition féline, où on lui dit qu'elle possédait quelque chose de spécial. Des gens ont voulu développer un plan d'élevage et créer une nouvelle race. C'est ainsi que cela prit de l'ampleur et finit par se répendre un peu partout dans le monde.

L'élevage du La Perm est fortement lié à la culture indigène américaine, parce que la ferme Koehl était située sur un territoire sacré d'une tribut Chinook, appelée Wishram. Le secteur contient toujours des découpages de roche de la déesse vigilante Tsagaglalal et donne un sentiment de protection, planant au-dessus du La Perm. C'est porquoi, beaucoup d'éleveur donnent à leurs chatons des prénoms d'indigènes américains.

Le La Perm est un chat tout en modération, sans extrême: il a cependant un aspect saisissant en raison de son manteau peu commun. Le maigre corps musclé est moyen avec les pattes et le cou assez longs. La tête est élégante avec des contours doucement arrondis et un large museau.  Ils ont les nez plutôt droit avec juste une courbe douce dans le profil et les grandes oreilles placées pour suivre la ligne de la tête. Beaucoup de propriétaires sont enchantés par leurs grands et expressifs yeux en forme d'amande.

Le La Perm existe dans tous les patrons et couleurs: les roux et torties ont toujours été très représentés, mais il y a des couleurs moins habituelles, comme le lilac et le chocolat. Le patron colour-point est très recherché, et des nouvelles variétés comme le ticked tabby et le shaded sont actuellement élevées.

La robe elle-même donne une sensation unique: elle n'est pas soyeuse; ayant une certaine adhérence sous la main, comme le velour. Il devrait être doux et attirant, bien que les shorthairs aient plus de texture. Le manteau est plutôt lâche, plutôt flexible une fois caressé, et se tient loin du corps sans le sous-poil épais. Il est onduleux ou bouclé partout avec les plus longues et les plus définies courbures dans le tombant des boucles. Les longhairs ont un la queue bouclée, tandis que les shorthairs ont des queues plutôt comme des brosses de bouteille.

Le La Perm est le chat de compagnie idéale pour ceux qui aiment un chat affectueux et sociable. En bonus, c'est un chat qui mue très peu, donc c'est bon pour quelqu'un qui a des tendances allergiques et qui veut un chat quand-même. Ce sont des chats actifs, donc dans un foyer tranquille, c'est une bonne idée d'en avoir deux. Ils sont robustes et sains sans besoin de soins spéciaux et de trop d'entretien, car leur poil se s'emmèle pas. Il suffit de les brosser occasionnellement.

En fait, les éleveurs disent que leurs "clients" reviennent souvent les voir, afin d'en commander un deuxième, car un seul La Perm n'est pas suffisant!
